Pop music workshops

Mike Senior

 

Mike developed an interest in recording while studying for a Music Degree at Cambridge University, and worked as an assistant engineer at a number of London studios including RG Jones, West Side, Angell Sound, and Music By Design. Following an MSc in Music IT at City University, he landed a full-time job as in-house engineer at Great Linford Manor Studios, working with artists such as The Charlatans, Reef, Therapy, Nigel Kennedy, and Wet Wet Wet. In October 1999, he moved back to Cambridge and joined the editorial department of Sound On Sound magazine full-time, where he was Reviews Editor for six years and presided over the launch of the popular 'Studio SOS' and 'Mix Rescue' columns. He now devotes his time to freelance engineering and writing forSound On Sound, as well as training and consultancy work. His best-selling book Mixing Secrets For The Small Studio provides a complete mixing course based around the techniques of more than 100 of the world's most famous producers.Mike is one of Sound On Sound's more prolific authors, and you can read some samples of his work on the SOS site by following the links below (although for any articles published within the last nine months you'll need an SOS e-subscription to view them in full):

Haydn Bendall

 

(born 13 April 1951) is a British music record producer, engineer and mixer. His employment at Abbey Road spanned from 1974 to 1991  (10 of which as the Chief Sound Engineer) before he left to forge an independent career. 

 

His achievements as a producer and an engineer are considerable, having worked with a host of top artists, including Aha, Alan Parsons, Angelo Badalamenti, Bonnie Tyler, Camel, Cliff Richard, Dave Gilmour, Elton John, Everything But The Girl, Freddie Mercury, Gary Moore, Kate Bush, Neneh Cherry, Ozzie Osbourn, Pat Metheny, Paul Mcartney, Pet Shop Boys, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Sting, Tina Turner, and Yusef Islam. Bendall is credited on over 200 albums. 

 

Maria Soboleva

 

iis a leading Russian sound engineer specializing in classical and jazz music and a professor at the Institute of Modern Arts. Her past professional experience includes positions at the All-Union Recording Studio "Melody", the State Museum of Musical Culture of Glinka, and the recording company called "Russian Compact Disc RCD". In addition she was the principal sound engineer at the Moscow theater and concert center of Pavel Slobodkin. In 2001 – 2010 she was the head of the Department of Sound Engineering at the Russian Academy of Music of Gnessins. Since 2010 she is the head of the Department of Sound Engineering at the Institute of Modern Arts in addition to her teaching at the Gerasimov Russian State University of Cinematography (internationally known as VGIK). M. Soboleva has published numerous articles in professional journals and authored several educational programs. She regularly organizers master classes throughout Russia.
As sound engineer and sound producer M. Soboleva released several hundred CDs. She has a long and successful history of collaboration with prominent artists and orchestras, such as the Svetlanov State Academic Symphony Orchestra, Russian National Orchestra, Moscow symphonic orchestra, the Moscow Synodal Choir, Michel Legrand, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Alexei Kozlov, amongst others. She is widely recognized as a leading Russian expert in chamber, baroque, and early music, evidenced by her brilliant work with the Early Music Ensemble "Madrigal", Academy of Early Music of Tatiana Grindenko, Early Music Ensemble "Baroque soloists", the Lundstrem Trio, etc.
Last but not least, she is a charming person whose smile makes people love working with her.

Sergey Bolshakov

 

one of the most famous russian sound & mastering engineers and producers in pop and rock music. Worked with superstars like Zemfira, Butusov, Borzov, bands "Alisa", "Splin", "Bi-2", "Mumij Trol" and many others. His studio - one of the most powerful and well-known in post-Soviet states - was architecturally designed by Philip Newell. Besides, Sergey Bolshakov is first and the most active user of Neumann's digital microphones in Russia.

 

He will speak about digital Neumann, that we will use and compare during classical recording workshop.
